Core Characteristics & Requirements

Aerospace applications impose near-extreme performance demands on metal bellows:

Ultimate Reliability

This is the primary requirement. In aircraft, rockets, and satellites, the failure of a bellows can lead to catastrophic consequences. Their fatigue life and nondestructive testing standards are exceptionally high.

Extremely Light Weight

The aerospace field adheres to the principle of "counting every gram." Bellows must be minimized and lightweight while fulfilling their function, often achieved through very thin walls and optimized structural design.

Broad Extreme Temperature Adaptability

  • High-Temperature End: Bellows near engines need to withstand high-temperature gases reaching several hundred or even over a thousand degrees Celsius.
  • Low-Temperature End: Bellows in propellant lines for liquid hydrogen, liquid oxygen, etc., operate at cryogenic environments of -196°C or even lower.

Materials must maintain excellent mechanical properties and sealing integrity across this wide temperature range.

Withstanding Complex Loads

In addition to internal pressure, they must endure severe vibration, shock, acceleration (overload), as well as thermal expansion and installation stresses from the piping system.
