An optical accelerometer is a device that measures acceleration by detecting changes in optical parameters (such as light intensity, phase, frequency, or wavelength). Its core function is to convert the motion of an inertial proof mass (caused by acceleration) into a measurable optical signal.

Basic Working Principle

Most optical acceleration sensors have a basic structure that includes:

  • Light Source: Such as a laser or light-emitting diode (LED).
  • Optical Sensing Element/Structure: The part that responds to acceleration, typically containing a proof mass and an optical path that changes due to the motion of the mass.
  • Photodetector: Such as a photodiode, used to receive the optical signal and convert it into an electrical signal.

When the sensor experiences acceleration, the inertial proof mass is displaced. This alters one or more parameters of the optical path, which is then detected by the sensing system.
