Metal Bellows Expansion Joints

The core functions of Metal Bellows Expansion Joints are consistent with those of bellows in general, but with a greater emphasis on pipeline system compensation:

  • Absorbing Thermal Movement: Compensates for the thermal expansion and contraction of pipelines caused by temperature changes. This is the most fundamental and critical function.
  • Compensating for Installation Errors: Absorbs alignment deviations that occur during the installation of the pipeline system.
  • Absorbing Vibration: Isolates and reduces the impact of mechanical vibrations from equipment (e.g., pumps, compressors, engines) and fluid pulsations on the pipeline system.
  • Absorbing Foundation Settlement: Compensates for displacement caused by uneven foundation settlement in long-distance pipelines.

Main Types

Based on the form of displacement they absorb, metal bellows expansion joints are primarily classified into the following categories:

1

Axial Expansion Joint

  • Function: Specifically designed to absorb compression or extension displacement along the pipeline's axis.
  • Characteristics: Cannot absorb lateral displacement by itself. Requires pipeline guide supports to withstand the pressure thrust force.
  • Application: Straight pipe sections, for compensating pure axial thermal expansion.

2

Lateral Expansion Joint

  • Function: Primarily used to absorb lateral displacement (including angular displacement) perpendicular to the pipeline axis.
  • Characteristics: Typically consists of two or more bellows connected by a central pipe. Offers large compensation capacity, suitable for complex movements in planar or three-dimensional piping systems.
  • Application: Piping systems with bends, such as L-shaped or Z-shaped configurations.

3

Angular Expansion Joint

  • Function: Absorbs angular rotation of the pipeline within a single plane.
  • Characteristics: Usually used with hinge rings, pin shafts, and other ancillary structures. Can only absorb angular displacement and cannot withstand pressure thrust.
  • Application: Situations requiring precise control of movement direction.

4

Universal Expansion Joint

  • Function: Can simultaneously absorb any combination of axial, lateral, and angular displacements.
  • Characteristics: Comprises a single bellows and two bellows connected to a center pipe. Offers very comprehensive compensation capabilities.
  • Application: Where pipeline space is limited or displacement directions are complex.

5

Pressure Balanced Expansion Joint

  • Function: Utilizes special hinge or tie-rod structures to balance the blind flange thrust generated by internal pressure, relieving the pipeline supports from bearing massive thrust loads.
  • Characteristics: Often used at equipment interfaces, boiler inlets, and other locations where critical equipment needs protection.
  • Application: Large-diameter, high-pressure pipeline systems where equipment interfaces cannot withstand significant thrust forces.
